King Charles shows true class in Easter message with moving 4-word reply to Putin’s evil
Buckingham Palace have released the King's annual Easter message before he delivers it at today's Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral.
King Charles's Easter message celebrates the important role love, faith and hope has in the world - especially during times of "human suffering". In his annual message on Maundy Thursday, the 76-year-old monarch discusses "one of the great puzzles of our humanity" - that people are capable of both "great cruelty and great kindness".
In an apparent reference to global conflicts, the King highlighted God's message that he "loved the world" and put his son on earth to show us that "love proved stronger than death". He also spotlights the three great virtues of "faith, hope and love" in a powerful four-word message.
It comes as the King and Queen prepare to attend the annual Royal Maundy Service, which will be held at Durham Cathedral this year. The ceremony is a major fixture on the royal calendar and normally the monarch, who is the head of the Church of England, presents specially minted coins to people recognised for their community service.
But last year, the King was unable to attend because he had stepped back from public-facing duties due to his cancer diagnosis a month earlier.
The Royal Maundy Service commemorates Jesus's Last Supper when he washed the feet of his disciples as an act of humility the day before Good Friday.
During the service, Charles will present 76 women and 76 men, signifying his age, with two purses, one red and one white, filled with Maundy money.
This year, the red purse will contain a £5 coin commemorating the Queen Mother and a 50p coin featuring stories of the Second World War.
In his 2025 Easter message, the King said Jesus's actions were a "token of His love that knew no bounds or boundaries and is central to Christian belief".
The King says: "This paradox of human life runs through the Easter story and in the scenes that daily come before our eyes — at one moment, terrible images of human suffering and, in another, heroic acts in war torn countries where humanitarians of every kind risk their own lives to protect the lives of others."
He concluded: "There are three virtues that the world still needs — faith, hope and love. 'And the greatest of these is love'.
"It is with these timeless truths in my mind, and my heart, that I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Easter."
Last year the King's Easter message was delivered via a pre-recorded address, as he was unable to attend the Royal Maundy service because he had stepped back from public-facing duties due to his cancer diagnosis a month earlier.
In his message, which was broadcast in his absence at Worcester Cathedral, the King called on people to "prioritise care and friendship".
The poignant message, which saw the monarch reaffirm his Coronation pledge "not to be served but to serve" came just days after the Princess of Wales revealed she had also been diagnosed with cancer.
King Charles's Easter Message In Full
One of the puzzles of our humanity is how we are capable of both great cruelty and great kindness.
This paradox of human life runs through the Easter story and in the scenes that daily come before our eyes — at one moment, terrible images of human suffering and, in another, heroic acts in war torn countries where humanitarians of every kind risk their own lives to protect the lives of others.
A few weeks ago, I met many such people at a reception in Buckingham Palace and felt a profound sense of admiration for their resilience, courage and compassion.
On Maundy Thursday, Jesus knelt and washed the feet of many of those who would abandon Him.
His humble action was a token of His love that knew no bounds or boundaries and is central to Christian belief.
The love He showed when He walked the Earth reflected the Jewish ethic of caring for the stranger and those in need, a deep human instinct echoed in Islam and other religious traditions, and in the hearts of all who seek the good of others.
The abiding message of Easter is that God so loved the world — the whole world — that He sent His son to live among us to show us how to love one another, and to lay down His own life for others in a love that proved stronger than death.
There are three virtues that the world still needs — faith, hope and love. “And the greatest of these is love”.
It is with these timeless truths in my mind, and my heart, that I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Easter.
