Retired Couple Loses Life Savings of $845,000 to Scammers

A retired California couple lost nearly all of their life savings after falling victim to an elaborate scam — and they're now sharing their story to warn others.

The Call That Started It All

In February 2025, Peter and Diane Hata received a call from someone posing as a U.S. Postal Service worker. The scammer claimed the couple had shipped illegal guns and that the FBI was actively investigating them.

"Naturally, you want to find out what happened because you want to clear your name," Peter said.

How the Scam Unfolded

The caller transferred them to a video conference with someone pretending to be an FBI agent, who told them they could speed up their case by sending money.

"We jumped at it because we were scared out of our minds," Peter recalled.

Over the following months, the Hatas sent tens of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency — and even took out an equity loan on the home they'd lived in for 37 years. The scammers kept them hooked with fake FBI documents, spoofed phone numbers, and constant reassurances.

"All this time they kept telling us we'd get our money back soon," Peter said. "I know this is hard for people to believe, but these people were extremely convincing."

The Moment They Realized the Truth

When mounting financial pressure forced them to call the real FBI, the couple discovered there were no agents with those names. They reported the scammers to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The emotional toll has been severe. "I feel like I am stuck," said Diane, who now struggles with anxiety and depression.

How to Help & How to Protect Yourself

The Hatas' family and friends have set up a GoFundMe to support them.

Experts remind the public: law enforcement will never call and ask you to send money or personal information. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact your local police station directly to verify before taking any action.
