Democrat Eileen Higgins Poised to Become Miami’s Next Mayor, Ending Nearly 30 Years of Republican Control of the Nonpartisan Office
With approximately 77 percent of precincts reporting in the City of Miami’s mayoral runoff, Eileen Higgins leads with about 59 percent of the vote, totaling 20,671 ballots, while Emilio T. González holds 41 percent, or 14,196 votes. Polls across Miami closed at 7 p.m. EST, concluding in-person voting for the December 9 election.
CNN’s Decision Desk has projected that Higgins will be the next mayor of the City of Miami, breaking a nearly 30-year Republican streak in control of the officially nonpartisan office. The projection also marks another example of Democratic electoral strength during the first year of Donald Trump’s second term, according to CNN.
The runoff was triggered after the November 4 first-round election, where no candidate secured a majority. Higgins finished first in that contest with roughly 36 percent of the vote, and González, a former Miami city manager and retired U.S. Army colonel, received about 19 percent.
Higgins, a former Miami-Dade County commissioner, is now positioned to become Miami’s first woman mayor, pending final certified results. Her campaign focused on housing affordability, transportation access, and economic pressures facing Miami residents. González emphasized public safety and management experience throughout his campaign.
While the remaining precincts have not yet reported official totals, the CNN projection reflects the strength of Higgins’ lead and the trajectory of the counted vote. Final canvassing will confirm the official outcome, but current reporting indicates Miami is set to elect its first woman mayor and its first Democratic mayor in nearly three decades.
